Weekly Wedding Tip: How to Have a Happy, Healthy Marriage

As you start your new lives together, here are some tips for a Happy, Healthy Marriage:

  • Have an open mind.
  • Always put the other first
  • Keep your expectations out of the married life and keep them as low as possible. Some problems arise out of expectation that are too high and unrealistic.
  • Decide how your household will operate and who will have which roles. Often finances and children are never discussed until later in the marriage and an incompatibility is discovered.
  • Money:  This is the biggest cause of divorce.  Set up a budget
  • Talk about your religious and moral beliefs. Are your values the same?
  • What are your goals for the future? Where do you each see yourselves in 10 years? Is it the same place?
  • Respect the ideas and proposals put forth by your spouse. Don’t let him have the feeling that you disrespect him.  And he should never disrespect you!
  • Be loyal to him and he is loyal to you. It is the MOST FUNDAMENTAL FOUNDATION of a married life. Loyalty to your spouse and only to your spouse.
  • And Finally…
  • Divorce is not an option:  Don’t ever think of the word divorce. Don’t ever bring it up in conversation.  Most problems have a cause and a solution. Even in the most extreme problems in a marriage:  first, talk to him, seek out professional help, go to a counselor.  Divorce should be the last and final resort.

Do all this and you will have a Happy, Healthy Married life.
