My fiancée’s best friend is getting married in November. He and his bride-to-be have planned an elaborate wedding. I just became engaged. My fiancée and I have dated for 5 years and known each other all our lives. I have always wanted a wedding in September or October. My fiancée and I do not want a big wedding. In fact, we are planning a destination wedding at the beach with our families and a few of our closest friends. Here is our dilemma: We do not want to take away from my fiancée’s best friend’s wedding by getting married this September or October right before their wedding. Yet, we do not want to have to wait another year plus to get married. We want to get married now. My question: is it OK to get married so close to our friends’ wedding?

Yes, it is OK to get married this year, even though your wedding is a month or two before your friends’ wedding. First, your weddings are very different. Your fiancée’s friend’s wedding is extravagant and has been planned for a while. It sounds like they will have a lot of guests and the wedding is quite involved. Your wedding, on the other hand, is quite the opposite, small and intimate. You are not trying to take away the excitement from your friends and you are not trying to upstage their wedding. You are ready to start your lives together as a married couple and to share your wedding with your families and your closest friends. Tell this other couple that you don’t want to wait and your intentions are not to take away from the excitement of their day. Be truthful. Invite them to your wedding. Most of all, enjoy the planning, enjoy your wedding, and enjoy this new adventure in your lives!
