Here Comes the Bride, Fit and Fabulous!
Congrats on your engagement! While you’re relishing in the delight of making wedding plans, you may also need time to become “fit and fabulous!”. What bride doesn’t want to look stunning on her wedding day? It’s only normal to be a bit self-conscious knowing all eyes will be transfixed on you as you walk down the aisle, and let’s not forget the wedding photos that live on forever.
Many brides embark on a stringent fitness and diet regimen only to become frustrated in less time than it takes to address an invitation. The excitement of your dream wedding becomes overshadowed with the stress of not fitting into your perfect gown. Don’t fret; I have five easy tips that can help any bride-to-be zip through her engagement and zip into her dress.
Say “I Do” to Breakfast
The biggest mistake any dieter makes is to skip breakfast. Breakfast kick-starts your day with the nutrition your body craves. Studies show that breakfast eaters weigh less overall and gain less weight than those who avoid it. Skipping breakfast can cause low energy, increase snacking, and leave you hungry before lunch.
- Enjoy a protein-packed egg white omelet with low-fat cheese brimming with vegetables.
- Replace your morning pastry with one cup high-fiber cereal and skim milk.
- Make oatmeal with low-fat milk instead of water to infuse calcium and protein into the bowl.
Toss the Bouquet and Soft Drinks
Sugar-sweetened beverages (including sweet tea) are high in calories, low in nutritional value, and add inches to your waistline. Avoiding one can of soda a day could equal an extra pound lost per month! Drink water or low-fat milk with nine essential vitamins and minerals, including calcium, potassium, and vitamin D, instead of regular sodas, fruit-flavored drinks, and sweetened teas.
- Carry a water bottle for easy access and aim for drinking 64 ounces each day.
- Order water or milk with quick-serve meals instead of sodas.
- Avoid alcohol until you toast as man and wife.
Say “Yes” to Snacks
Smart snacking between meals is a great way to slim down. Nutrient-rich snacks will help you curb hunger pains and avoid overeating at meal time. By scheduling and preparing for snacks you can be sure to have nutrient-rich options available. Stock your car, purse, or desk drawer with these simple snacks.
- Sliced apples and pre portioned 100 calorie nut packs.
- Pre-measured trail mix (¼ – ½ cup).
- Greek yogurt (for twice the protein as regular yogurt) and low-fat granola.
Alter Your Side Orders
The entrée is typically the focus when trying to cut calories. It is true choosing grilled over fried and/or removing the skin can save countless calories. But if you don’t want to part with your main dish, look to the side order and opt for lower calorie options. Don’t forget to pass the bread basket, literally.
- Replace a side of fries with a salad or vegetable soup.
- Ask for salad dressing and all condiments on the side.
- Opt for double grilled vegetables over the potato or rice.
Savor Memories Not Seconds
Think getting in shape for your wedding is hard? Try accomplishing this feat while attending parties in your honor, where the only thing more important than the bride is the buffet! Set your mind to enjoy the evening, savoring the sweet moments but not the extra calories.
- Never arrive hungry. Have a protein rich snack such as Greek yogurt or a handful of nuts.
- Limit cocktails and wine, because research shows alcohol leads to over indulgence due to loss of inhibitions.
- Nosh on nutrient-rich foods. Always fill half your plate with brightly colored fruits and vegetables from the crudités tray, first.
Remember, diet and exercise complement each other. Physical activity, especially aerobic activities (like brisk walking, jogging, cycling or swimming) can help relieve stress, regulate appetite, and burn up extra calories from your cake tasting. For good health, we need 30 to 60 minutes every day.
Regardless of your motivation, it’s always a good idea to start off your marriage with better nutrition and fitness goals. Remember, your groom-to-be thinks you’re perfect just the way you are; otherwise, he wouldn’t have proposed his everlasting commitment to you. With a little planning and a healthy eating plan, you’ll glow in your wedding gown!
