What is the Proper Tuxedo Fit?

Style is the new comfort. Formalwear is designed to display style … and modern or slim fit is the only way to go. Fitted does not just mean tight, it means that it fits – truly fits. Shoulder fit is crucial. Big “comfy” clothing does not represent proper formalwear.

You must remember style is all in the details. Your coat sleeves should be slightly shorter than your shirt sleeves to allow for a touch of shirt cuff to be exposed. Never judge your sleeve length by raising your arms in front of you – unless, of course, you’re planning on walking around like that.

Cufflinks are formal jewelry that should always be worn with your tuxedo shirt. They are designed to accent your sleeve giving off an elegant, sophisticated look.

Tapered (fitted) tuxedo shirts allow for a more tailored appearance when the jacket is removed.

Wing tip shirt collars are more formal than lay down collars; however, either may be worn with a bow tie.

Shirt collars are intended to fit snug at the neck. A loose collar tends to make your tie appear farther away from your neck than it should.

A sometimes controversial element of formalwear is the proper length of the tuxedo trousers. Tuxedo trousers should never be cuffed at the bottom or worn below the waist. They should be hemmed properly and have no more than a slight break on top of the shoe. Socks are not to be seen; however, your pants should not drag the ground or bunch up on top of your shoes. This look is considered to be sloppy and distasteful.

Patent shoes are the most formal way to finish the look of your tuxedo. Without them, it’s like seeing a Porsche with plain rimless tires. Patent shoes complete your elegant, dapper look.
