Expert Advice: 5 Questions to Ask your Caterer

Whether you’re on the fence, or you’ve settled on your caterer, we are sure that there are plenty of questions you want to ask in order to make your dream reception come to life. We’ve broken down some of the most important ones, and recruited the help of our expert, Dwayne Rainer with Biaggi’s Ristorante Italiano in Ridgeland, Mississippi, to help shed some light on these essential queries.

Can you assist with other aspects of the wedding?

One benefit of catering is the cut to your own labor. We know that you’ll already have enough on your plate, and not having to set everything up yourself is a definite perk. Most caterers will have this covered, but it’s important to ask so you know exactly what you’re getting. “We handle the setup and breakdown of all onsite catering,” says Dwayne. Caterers like Biaggi’s usually provide other things such as chafing dishes and serving utensils, saving you from the hassle of picking all that up yourself. These things are crucial to know so that you can feel at ease when planning your reception.

What do you do with leftovers?

This is one question that may fly under your radar, but it could be helpful to know if you can’t get enough of a particular dish and want to snack on it later. It’s also good to know if you’re worried about wasting food, and maybe you even want it to be taken to a food bank. No matter what the reason, leftovers don’t always have to be an afterthought. “We always speak to the host to see if they want the leftovers, and we will box it up for them,” says Dwayne.

Do we have to work with your present menu, or can we do a custom menu?

We know that you’ve probably picked your caterer because you love the food they provide. With that said, being able to personalize your menu is always a plus. Working with your caterer to customize your spread guarantees you’ll get to serve your favorite dish, and helps with navigating dietary restrictions. Dwayne says, “We can create any menu you want as long as it’s recipes we serve or have served in the past.” This kind of thing lets you bring your own personality and tastes into the menu, making your special day even more special.

What information do you need from me before my wedding day?

This is the perfect question to ask for the organized bride. They will most likely want to know about your budget, the number of guests, and the projected date and location of your wedding. According to Dwayne, “We start by asking dates and times to make sure we can do it. We also ask about dietary restrictions. The most important thing we need to know is the number of guests.” Asking this question ensures that they have all the details they need in order to make your reception as easy as possible.
