Tuxedo or suit? As a groom, this is one of the biggest questions you ask yourself when planning your wedding attire. The great news is there’s no wrong answer. We reached out to Tom Steadman of Tuxedo Junction in Jackson, Mississippi, for some tips to help grooms decide on their look. With over 25 years in the wedding industry, Tom has the expert advice you need. All eyes are on the bride, but we know her eyes are on you.

When deciding between a tux or a suit, Tom advises to consider the tone of your event first. Opting for an elegant black-tie event or a classic, vintage-inspired soiree? Then a tux is probably the way to go. If your bride is going to be walking down the aisle in a full ball gown, you want to compliment her with an equally fancy wardrobe. Consider what’s on trend. According to Tom, classic is in. “We’ve seen more and more of the classic black tux for weddings over the last few months. Black is in. Classic is in,” Steadman says. If you’re worried about blending in with your groomsmen, stand out with a black paisley bow-tie while your groomsmen sport solid ones. Alternatively, opt for a skinny black tie.

With all the hubbub about tuxedos, when should you opt for a suit? If your wedding is during the day or themed less formally, for example boho or rustic, suits are a more fitting option. Moreover, this is when your own comfort-level or personality is important to consider. Tuxedos are statement pieces, but suits may offer more of an opportunity to express yourself. From colors to vests, this fashion choice will be perfect for you if you want to show off your style in your wedding wardrobe.

Finally, consider your investment and how much use you may get after the wedding. Most men will not get much use out of a tuxedo over the years, making renting the sensible option for tuxes. Suits, however, are a different story. Purchasing a well-tailored suit is an investment you won’t regret making. Your wedding suit could serve you well for years to come anytime there’s a need to dress-up.
