I DO Y'ALL

Expert Advice: Painter Kendall Kirk Singleton

Kendall Kirk Singleton has been painting since she was a young girl. In 2015, she was blessed with the opportunity to turn her talent into a business. We recently asked the Jackson, Mississippi native about her wedding paintings and how she captures special memories from a couple’s big day.

Please tell our readers about yourself and Kendall Kirk Singleton Art – what brought you to your career as a painter? How did you get started?

First and foremost I love the Lord and am thankful to Him for giving me an amazing family, husband, friends and a job I love.

I have loved to paint ever since I was little. Art was my favorite subject in school. During my senior year at Mississippi State University, I had my first big show and took commissions while I was still studying to figure out what I wanted to do when I graduated. To my surprise, I made more painting than I would at an entry level job at that time. That was in 2015, and since then, my art career has grown even more. It is such a blessing I have gotten to do what I love!

How would you describe yourself as an artist?

I would describe myself as an artist that loves to paint in a style that is bright and fun. Art for me is about creating something you want to treasure and look at for the rest of your life that makes you happy and just completes a room.

Can you tell us about your style as a visual artist?

My style is very colorful. I use a palette knife and oil paints to create art that is realistic with an abstract flair using vivid color combinations, and I look for great lighting in photos. I like to capture the subject well while also making it unique.

What special services do you offer for a bride-to-be and her fiancé?

I paint wedding paintings mainly from photos. The bride will send me her favorite pictures from the big day, and I work to create a piece she and her husband will love in their home forever.

What types of work can you do for gifts for the bridal party and also for anniversary gifts for couples?

I have had husbands contact me in the past to surprise their wives with a wedding painting, or parents/grandparents that want to give one as a special gift to the couple.

What do you like most about what you do?

I love creating art that reminds someone of something they love. I’m excited about the projects I have to work on every day. I also love that it gives me a lot of flexibility.  I got married in 2016, and we have been moving around with my husband’s job, so painting has been a great way for me to have an income wherever we go.

What are the current trends in painting for weddings or commissioned art pieces? What do you see on the horizon for up and coming trends in weddings for 2017?

Couples today have all these outdoor portraits taken and I love working from photos of couples in these beautiful outside settings. Thanks to social media like Pinterest, incorporating art and weddings more often has become a huge thing. I love that and hope it continues.

Are you available to work with brides from across the country?

Yes! They can send me their photos, and I can ship anywhere in the US.

How far in advance do you need for a bride to schedule your services? What is the best way to reach you?

I like for a bride to contact me at least two months in advance, but the earlier the better! It depends on my workload at the time, but since I work with oil paints, they take forever to dry once I am finished, so I like to have plenty of time to plan for that! The best way to contact me is at kendallsart15@gmail.com.

Would you like to add any additional tips or advice about wedding planning in regards to scheduling or deciding on an artist for a custom wedding piece?

My number one tip is to remember what’s important, which is enjoying the most awesome day with the love of your life! To capture those moments on canvas, choose and artist whose style you love!
