Wedding Wednesday: Cutting Edge Cakes

Cake trends for 2016 run the gamut from the romance of traditional and vintage styles to the high glam of metallic and fashion’s latest trends. Some of our favorites have been created by cake designers from around Mississippi. Premier Bride of Mississippi’s Style Editor, Cortney Warren, designed these gorgeous sets to show off these delectable cakes. Enjoy these photos by Sharon Coker Photography and Lindsay Vallas Photography

Ombre tones have take the world by storm with the fading from light-to-dark shade effect being seen in hair, fashion and home furnishings. This cake combines the look with a variation of the ruffled cake by stacking the ombre layers atop a layer featuring vertical ruffles to accent the downward flowing visual.

Metallics have been really hot for a couple of years now, and 2016 will be no exception. Rather than high glamour, brides are using antique and rose golds to create a fairy tale, romantic mood.

The vintage trend will continue through 2016 shifting to a softer more romantic style with Victorian touches. We love the combination of the crafty chalkboard effect of the bottom layer and plaque with the soft swirled buttercream and fondant in mint. The vintage cake topper and delicate pastries accentuate the look.

Traditional cakes are still in style as timeless, elegant looks from the 50’s are attractive to many brides. We’ll see lots of intricate piping and delicate flowers on these traditional cakes.

(Trend/Art Deco) Cake: Torta Dolce; Photographer: Tilley Photographer; Floral: Beau Rivage; Rentals: ABC Rental

This Gatsby-inspired cake adds a touch of elegance to a high glam wedding. These architectural cakes look good in a variety of colors with a touch of metallic.

(Trend/Lace) Cake: Cotton Blues; Photographer: Tilley Photography; Floral: Beau Rivage; Rentals: ABC Rentals

Romantic lace has made a big comeback in bridal wear for 2016, so seeing it make the transition to wedding cakes is no surprise. This metallic-dusted, lace overlay cake features delicate piping and flowers for a soft, elegant look.

(Trend/Naked Cakes) Cake: Cups-N-Cakes; Photographer: Sharon Coker Photography; Floral: Cups-N-Cakes; Rentals: Eventful

The naked cake continues to gain popularity as brides are still embracing outdoor, rustic weddings. This cake looks great with floral, succulent or fruit & vegetable accents.
