Dear Bridal Guru,
I just got engaged. I want to enjoy my engagement, but Mom is pushing me to buy my gown now. She says we don’t have a lot of time. We are having a fall wedding. Who is right, me or Mom? Do I really need to go gown shopping now?
Excitedly Engaged
Dear Excitedly Engaged,
You know that saying, “Mother is always right”. Yes, your mother is right and you need to buy your gown now. Here’s why: gowns, unless they are having huge sales, are not ready-to-wear gowns where you try it on and leave with the gown. You cannot go in and just buy a gown off the rack, unless they are having a sale of discontinued gowns or an inventory reduction.
Bridal boutiques must order their gowns. The bridal consultants at the various salons take your measurements and your gown is made from what is submitted many times. With all the lace and beading, it takes time, usually six to nine months. Yes, it may seem you are cutting it close, but don’t stress. If you go to a reputable bridal salon, they can speed things along and get your gown in time for your fitting and provide any alterations, if necessary. You can find local bridal boutiques at www.premierbridems.com.
This way you can still enjoy your engagement and make gown shopping fun with your mom. Some brides have an entourage with their sister(s), best friend, future mother-in-law and, possibly, a stylist. There’s no other time like this in your life, so treasure this time with family and close friends. Finally, in your quest for bridal gown shopping: you will know the gown the minute you try it on. Word of advice: Don’t bring the groom.
Also, don’t wait too long to order your attendants’ dresses. Most of these are also special orders. Get everyone together if you can so you find the color and style that flatters all. These, too, can take months to come in and many times they may require alterations. It’s best to order all the dresses at the same time so they have the same dye lot and the colors will all be the same. Giving yourself plenty of time now means less stress later.
Enjoy your gown shopping!! Pick out the perfect gown for your perfect day. And remember, Mother is always right! The Bridal Guru.
